Cool Fresh Food Storage

So, if the electricity goes out for a long time... but only if you're in a relatively dry climate, this might work for you!

It's called a zeer, and has been around for a long, long time. So many electric-free solutions have, but we don't know about them.

Essentially it's two clay pots, with drainage holes sealed up, a smaller pot inside a larger, with wet sand packed into the space between them. Put fresh vegetables inside, and cover with a wet cloth, and viola! A food cooler. Here's a wiki article for your reference.

Here's an alternate lid option.

Here's a whole set-up for them, to have food for sale or just a lot of food!

Here's one in action. You can see the sand. A few samples of what's inside sit on top of the cloth when vendors are selling their produce.

We're so pleased you are reading Farming Salt & Light! Choose how you live!
